Missoula Measures - Suicide: More Data

Back to Suicide Measure

Question, Persuade, Refer is a method of identifying those who may be at risk for suicide.   It is especially designed for friends, family and community members with no professional training.  If you think someone might be suicidal, ask!  Training provides information on ways to get appropriate help.  To find out about upcoming trainings, or arrange one for your group, contact Maureen O'Malley at the Missoula Health Department, 406-258-3881.

Question, Persuade and Refer---Ask a question, save a life.

Q - Question the person about suicide.
Do they have thoughts? Feelings? Plans?  Don't be afraid to ask.

P - Persuade the person to get help.
Listen carefully.  Then say, "Let me help." Or, "Come with me to find help."

R - Refer for help.
If dealing with a child or an adolescent, contact a parent or any adult who can help such as school personnel, a counselor, social worker, or psychologist, physician, member of the clergy, tribal elder, coach, or any other adult you know who may have influence in the child's life.
